Photography Outing

Today my photography class at Memphis Theological Seminary went on a little photo outing.  We spent approximately 3 hours turfing though what is massive Elmwood Cemetery. Thank the sweet lord that we started at 8 am and not at noon.  (P.S. It is still HOT in Memphis)

When I got home I immediately started sifting through my photos.  I took about 250 photos, and have already been able to narrow it down to approximately 20.  The trouble is that I have to narrow it down even more as I am to turn in 8-10 photos for this assignment...Yes after spending hours walking and snapping away, now I have to narrow it down? "Geez", she exclaims with a sigh.

This is where "all y'all" come in.  I am have posted 19 photos, and I want you to tell me which ones "speak" to you.  Yes, some of them are similar (I spent a lot of time in a few particular areas) but that is what makes it even harder to decide which ones I like.  I'm curious which ones YOU like!

7 photos that ROCK

I really like the green ottoman and the very tall white walls.
I think there is a nice counterbalance between the white walls and the yellow curtains.

Great table, very similar to the one we currently have.

ALL of it! I absolutely love all of the items in this picture.

This photo is another view of the room from the previous photos.  I really like this silver chair, it's super different. I also really like the console. It is much like something one might find from World's Away.  Does anybody know where to get one of those pigs? They're awesome.

This is a photo that causes me to be slightly puzzled. There's a lot going on in this room.  What I like is the ottoman, and the leopard chair that is behind it.  And let's be serious, the size of this dressing room is amazing.  Who wouldn't love to have this room to get dressed in every morning?

This is another room I think is absolutely beautiful.
The white walls are vibrantly balanced by the curtains and pillows.

This bed is really different isn't it? Not something you can pick up at the ol' Pottery Barn, that's for sure.  None the less I really like the magenta wall with the orange bed.  Very sharp, and an innovative idea for a girls room.

These 7 photos come from the home of Nanette Lepore. Can you imagine living in this house? There are parts of all 7 of these photos that I adore. There are also parts of these 7 photos that I am puzzled by. None the less, the adoration outweighs the puzzlement.

Yawn....it's now time for the inevitable Sunday afternoon nap.

End of week 3.

Today was the end of week 3.  Once again it was time to face the metric scales! I have learned that I like seeing my weight much better when it is in metric, it makes this diet thing seem effortless.  But then I remember that I have to multiply that number as 1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds. Regardless, it was another good week and the total weight loss for this week was 5 pounds.

This week my food was quite tasty.  I had eggs, fixed in various ways, lots of Zone bars, Mahi-Mahi/Tuna/Salmon burgers with whole wheat buns, etc.

Tonight, this is what I had for dinner....

2 cups of broccoli
Chocolate Peanut Butter Zone Bar

This is probably my favorite dinner entree so far, Cheese and Vegetable Enchiladas

My personal assistant is finally getting used to this diet change, as it has been a change for all of us.  He seems to be on the bandwagon now.  We do have to do a few things to appease his little furry self.

The house got cleaned this week, and now Handsome has once again taken
his place on top of the table.  He claims he is  staking the territory for all of "cat-dom"...but mostly for himself.

And....Handsome has officially requested a chair in the kitchen, the chances of
getting your tail stepped on are far less when you're in your "high chair".

...and then I found $10

Guess what!?!?! Today my friends Demi and Ashton stopped by!  It was amazing.  We had lunch, went for a walk around midtown, and then I gave Demi a piano lesson.

And then I found $10!!!!

Psych!

Well Demi and Ashton didn't really stop by but I did acquire $10 today by somewhat irregular means.

This morning at 8am I went back to the Clinical Research Center at The University of Tennessee/Methodist Hospital for my 3rd of 6 sessions for blood work.  The blood work appointments in entirety lasts approximately 4 hours.  Blood is drawn at -15, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes. In preparation to do this you have to fast for 24 hours prior to being at the hospital and as the reward, you get to take home $10.

Remember a week or so ago when I mentioned that the hallway at the hospital near the research wing looked like a scene from one of the Bourne movies, you know when they show what the hallway at the training facility looked like...well here it is today I documented it. There are no people walking down this hall, and what's creepier is that there are no people in those rooms! They are empty!

Doesn't that sort of freak you out? This is the hallway I expect Pam Landy to come walking down.

Today went better than others because my super sweet hubbs came with me...he's cute isn't he.

Thanks be to God for a good hubbs. Today the topic of conversation was..."what are we going to do to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary" which is just around the corner. Also, he wanted to see what all this is about first hand.  I can only talk about these folks by name so many times without him having a face in mind.  Right? Right.

So...here's what it looks like.

The bucket of ice was where they put the tubes in between draws.  Today, there were a total of 22 tubes taken.  Hallelujah that the nurse was good today!

There is my arm wrapped in a heating pad.  Yes, it does hurt. Yes, it is for science and because of this study at some point in time somebody's life may be saved because of better treatment for diabetes....not to mention that in 6 months...my hinny will be smaller.  All things considered, this is a life changing event. And, it's what's going on in Mrs. Dow-Ward's neighborhood.

once again...work spaces

As cited in previous posts, I've been on the prowl for a desk/work space other than the dining room table. As of recently, the dining room table seems to have been cast in the roll of holding large piles of books and various pieces of music along with the casual table runner....that is not where I want those things to be!

Last week, a friend of mine on Facebook posted 3 photos of a desk that was FREE for the taking (gasp). I have no funds to buy a desk, that is the other flaw in this fabulous plan.  This seemed to good to be true. The hitch in this brilliant plan is that now I have to figure out how to get it home.  It weighs a TON!

I went to see the desk before my class on Thursday evening and took my trust tape measure along to check the dimensions to make sure it would be of suitable size for my space.  Naturally I will have to do a little work on this puppy to shine her up.

In the weeks before I found this option, I had been looking for metal file cabinets on craigslist and had planned on buying a solid core slab door to put on top of them.  This just might be the best of both worlds because....it is free!

In a dream world, it would be painted a glossy white...I'll have to see what I can negotiate with myself.  I'm an awful spray painter! I think I hold the can way to close.

Additionally...In a dream world I would buy/find a desk chair that looks like this to pair with it.

But that's the dream world....and I life in the real world and until those two worlds collide, I'll have to settle for something else.

End of week 2.

This morning at 10:30 on the nose I reported in for my week 2 weight in and to pick up food for week 3.

This is what it looks like going down the hallway to the Clinical Research Center at UT/Methodist Hospital.  I sort of feel like I am walking down the hallway on the training facility set for the Bourne movies. Long...dark...quiet.....hallway. I fully expect Pamela Landy to pop out at any minute.

I am proud to report that this week I lost 6 pounds.  That was a joyful victory after what seemed like a long week. Next Tuesday, I go in for blood work (sigh), what's called a meal tolerance test.  That means is that they take blood at -30, 0, 30, 60, 90 minutes. What that translates to is a long morning in a hospital bed.  But, if it means I'll have a smaller hinny when it is over, sign me up! (Oh wait, I did.)
It is times like this when I have to remember that I am getting free food and a nutritionist for 6 months!  In my mind somehow that evens out.

My nutritionist, Kristin, took this photo today before I left.  I suppose that I need to have some sort of documentation of what I looked like when this all began.  I wore this dress the day I did the initial weigh in and now have it in my crazy mind that I need to wear it for every weigh in for the next six months.  It is going to get a little cold come January, I suppose a sweater and leggings will have to be added while in transport but for sure not for the scale! This is science people,  I have to keep it constant.

So, would you like to see what I eat? Many of you have messaged me to see what in the world I'm eating.  Many, like you, and like my mother are very curious to see what comes home with me after I weigh in.  So, here it is!

This is what my food looks like when I pick it up at the hospital.
In these two large cooler bags is my food for 7 days...it's like Christmas morning!

Many of my dinner entrees are "Zone" brand.  You can go on-line to see where they are distributed (in what store) in your area. I like most of them, all of these are ones I like and recommend.  Not pictured, Boca nuggets, they are delicious.  Come to find out, they're even vegan! Fooled me!

I eat 2 cups of these veggies per day.  This brand available at Target.

I have these little baggies of plain almonds all over the place.  Remember in The Devil Wears Prada in the opening scene when KT Tunstall is singing "Suddenly I See" and Andy is getting ready for work...it goes to a clip with one of the Runway girls putting almonds into a small jar.  I always thought that was weird...until now.  Here I am with almonds in baggies in 10 and 15 count all over the kitchen.
Perhaps I should have taken that cue 4 years ago.

One might think that Slim Fast is strictly a breakfast/lunch food.  Well in this diet plan, it is my before bed snack.  High Protein Slim Fast, available at most food chains.  The yogurt is one of my breakfast options, I eat 2 of them for breakfast often paired with almonds or 3 pieces Canadian bacon.

Special K cereal, naturally it is also of the high protein persuasion and the Canadian Bacon.
Both breakfast options.  The Zone bars are my in between meals snacks.  Unfortunately I am chained to the 3 flavors pictured.   They are available at Target and come in a variety of flavors,
but for the sake of science I will only get to eat these 3.

This milk is AWESOME.  It goes with my cereal.  I lap every particle up as though I'm a kitten. An interesting fact about this milk is that it doesn't have to be refrigerated until you want to use it. It is available at the grocery store in the organic section.  I've often seen if 10/$10.

I've passed these little guys by I don't know how many times thinking that they were to small to do anybody any good.  Once again, I should have taken their product placement cue when I passed by it in the grocery store.  These things are great.  An excellent option on the go, or to add with your breakfast meal.  A very good balance of something sweet, right when you need it.

Drum rollllll....please!

This is my very favorite of my "diet" food.  These are available at Whole Foods and are amazing.  The Canadian has been such a trooper through this diet.  So I went and picked up some extra boxes of these so we could at least eat the same thing together (precisely 3 times per week).  The sad part is that when I get to eat mine, it is just the fish and the whole wheat bun. Nothing as fancy as they've pictured.  The good news is that I'm afraid all that other jazz would actually foul it up.  They are AMAZING.  We grill them outside, 3-4 minutes per side, depending on what kind of grill you're working with.
Y-U-M!!!!  I'm always really excited for my fish days, I've found myself planning for when they
will be during the week.

Now, you might be wondering, how do I know when to eat each item and on what day.  That's where the handy, dandy nutritionist comes in.  Based on my resting metabolic rate (one of the test they do) they determine how many calories my body can burn on it's own without any extra exercise.  That is how they determine how many calories I can eat per day.  Another test that was done was a "dexa" bone scan. WOW, that was really cool. I got to see all of my skeleton and the "extras" that surround it.  The "extras" as I affectionately refer to them, is what we're working on reducing in the process of this diet.
Lastly, during the blood work they do a meal tolerance test.  This shows how you blood sugar reacts to food consumption, and now, to controlled food consumption.
When I pick up my food each week, Kristin (the nutritionist) gives me a booklet all spelled out as to what I am to eat each day.  All of the caloric content matches what my body is able to burn through my resting metabolic rate.
Exercise is not recommended other than what you normally do, in my case for a while that's been a whole lot of nothing other than my stint with Bikram back in the spring.  and my periodic visits to the church parish life center.  The study wants to determine how the food changes your composition, not the exercise.

As I've grown more aware of my food consumption and am re learning some of these concepts about eating I'm already starting to fret about what I'll do come the end of the 26th week. I asked Kristin about it today...her reply was along the lines of we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.  A gentle reminder that we are still 24 weeks away!

Week 3, bring...it...on!

Weight Loss and Work Space Inspiration

Yesterday I completed weeks 1 of my high protein diet through University of Tennessee/Methodist Hospital.  And subsequently, today I began week 2.  This is weeks 1 and 2 of 26.  It is much more comforting to think of this in terms of weeks rather than days.  If you look at it in terms of days 182.5 days is a little daunting.  So I'd rather just go with "week 2" than days.  See what I mean.  Though I do feel as though this is working...did I mention I lost weight this week....so I guess thumbs up?

Tonight while I was reading some other blogs I started to reconsider the location for a home workspace.  Until about 7 minutes ago I was considering putting it in the butler's pantry, a room with suitable size between our kitchen and dining room. My new epiphany includes putting a work space in one of the closets in the downstairs bedrooms.  We have 2 bedrooms downstairs, 1 that actually serves as a bedroom and the other that is our tv room. I'm considering taking the closet door off the closet and using it as a work space.  There are really nice built in shelves and there would be room enough for a desk and chair below.

To add to my inspiration of work spaces, I found a few more photos to throw into the mix....

I love these lacquer doors! Ce Bon!

This just looks inspiring to me, in a productive way.

I love the X legs on this desk and all the orange boxes with the books creatively stacked aside!
.

And now the pies de resistance...how would you like to have that as your view while working?
Nothing to sneeze at.

Last but not least I found this photo in a Google search for this wall paper.
We are hoping to put it in our dining room.  It just so happens that we also have a chair like this and a
kitty willing to pose in a similar posture.....

So here's to weight loss, wallpaper samples, kitties, X legs on desks, work spaces in closets,
and a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower!

Happy Labor Day Weekend, "All Y'all" (as I've learned to say in the south).
I'll eat, drink, and be merry....as long as it is on my approved food list of course.

A big case of "The Grrrrrs..."

At approximately 2:17pm this afternoon I was gearing up for my afternoon of teaching when I reached for my gum jar to take a piece of gum. I've been known to chew a piece of gum (or 4)  before students arrive. Then I had to mentally slap myself on the wrist because I was about to consume something on the not approved list.  "Shame, shame, Hilary", I had to say.  I suppose that during the next few weeks, as it is still week 1 after all, that I am going to have to be on the look out for these opportunities to stray....and if not anything else my little music pupils might have to learn to like another kind of gum. (smile)

My first weigh in is on Friday morning.  I'm looking forward to the results and the beginning of week 2. It'll get easier, I know that it will.  Right now it just seems like a long rough road that is endless. I just wonder how many weeks I'll keep saying that? I suppose minding your weight is never something that is by definition easy though is it?
One thing I can tell you is that when I am finished with lessons today I will be on the war path for sugar free gum. 'Cause the double bubble is on the way out!

Habitually Chic®: Chic at Work

I absolutely loved the blog post from Habitually Chic today, so much that I linked it below. I am trying to think about how to organize a work space at home for the Canadian and I.  Though our needs vary the fact remains the same that we currently use our lap tops on our, guess where, laps at whatever chair we can fall into. And there are books....EVERYWHERE!
These photos in the blog post are certinally some exceptions to the rule, and some exhibits of the rule. I love Jason Wu's desk, Anna Wintour (naturally) and Jenna Lyons.....The Oval Office is not to shabby! The Prez has a nice space to solve the problems of the world...LITERALLY.
Habitually Chic®: Chic at Work: "There are a lot of important issues going on in the world but the press is jumping all over the fact that President Obama had the Oval Offic..."
